How Much Do You Know 
About Hispanic Americans?

Unit Objectives:
Students will
  • increase their English vocabulary as they work collaboratively to discover facts about the contributions of Hispanic Americans in the United States.
  • explore notable Hispanic Americans on Biography.com and select one individual to research and present to class. 
  • create an avatar about their selected person, which will include the recording of a first person narrative in the student's voice.

Appetizer (Vocabulary):
After selecting one Hispanic American individual for research and presentation, students will read the individual's biography and complete the following vocabulary activities:
  • Identify 12 new/unknown words
  • Create a Quizlet study set
  • Study the new words by completing the Quizlet activities
    • flashcards, learn, speller and test
  • Share the link to the Quizlet in Blackboard Learn.
  • Note: Students must take a vocabulary quiz before proceeding to the "Entrée" section
Entrée (Listening & Reading):
Working collaboratively with a partner, students will share their chosen Hispanic American and complete the following activities:
  • Read the biography aloud
  • Gather the following facts:
    • Full Name at Birth (may be different than professional name)
    • Date of Birth and Date of Death (if applicable)
    • Birthplace
      • Hispanic origin if born in the United States
    • Best Known For (usually occupation)
    • Quote
      • This may require searching another website
    • An Interesting Fact or Surprise
    • Use this form to enter the information
Sides (Grammar & Writing):

1.  Log in to No Red Ink and choose one of the following grammar exercises to complete a practice and a quiz.
    • Capitalization 1
    • Capitalization 2
    • Contractions
    • Adjectives & Adverbs
2.  Choose one of the following prompts and write a blog post. 
  • Choose a quote by your person of choice. Interpret its meaning and think about how it applies to everyday life (your life or anyone else's).
    • Create a graphic of the quote using Quozio, Recite or any other tool of choice.
  • Reflection on Hispanic Heritage Month
    • As HHM draws to a close, what have you gained from the readings?
    • What have you learned from the person you read about? How has this person inspired you?
    • Whether or not you are of Hispanic Heritage, what are your thoughts on the significance of HHM?
    • Sentence starters are available upon request.
Dessert (Speaking):
Create an avatar of your selected individual using Voki.com and present it to class on Friday, October 14, 2016.  The avatar will also be embedded in your blog post for the week.
