Presidential Candidates
Students will improve English language skills as they familiarize themselves with the 2016 presidential candidates.

- together with a partner, select one presidential candidate to read and blog about
- NOTE: Students will work cooperatively but will submit individual work and will be graded individually
- as a class, contrast and compare candidates' backgrounds and positions on issues
- engage in grammar skills practice
- enhance speaking skills through oral presentations and/or videoconferencing
- collaboratively discuss international with a class in a foreign country

Appetizer:
After logging in/signing up at Newsela.com and skimming through the articles about the four presidential candidates, select a candidate to read about.
Entree: (Reading/Listening):
Together with a partner, read the chosen candidates' biography aloud. Then, read, discuss and answer the quiz questions in the text set.
- Class discussion. Upon completing the read aloud and questions, we will hold a class discussion about all candidates.
- Cast your vote. Students will cast their vote on Newsela.com
1. Grammar.
Students will complete a practice and quiz on noredink.com, based on their language needs.
2. Writing.
Click on the "write" link in the selected Newsela text set and blog your answer to the question listed in this section.
Dessert:
Together with your partner, create a seven-slide Buncee presentation about the candidate you studied using the AEIOU model. The slides will contain the following:
- Title Slide including the candidates photo from Newsela
- Remember to cite the source
- A: Adjectives
- List two adjectives that describe the candidate and the reasons for using those adjectives.
- E: Emotion
- What emotion did you feel when you read about the candidate?
- I: Interesting
- What is the most interesting thing you learned about the candidate?
- O: Oh!
- Name two things that surprised you about the candidate.
- U: Uh?
- Name one thing that you don’t understand (or have a question about) regarding this character.
