~ Thanksgiving Traditions~

Unit Objectives:

Students will log on to Newsela.com and choose one of the following topics for their reading assignment: 

  • lesser known facts about the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States (or)
  • shopping on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday
    ELP Standards:
    Standard 1: Social and Instructional Language
    Standard 2: Language of Language Arts
    Standard 5: Language of Social Studies


    Appetizer (Reading):
    • Read one of the two assigned articles on Newsela.com
    • Complete the quiz questions as well as the writing assignment for the selected topic
    • Prepare to discuss the topic in class and respond to a speaking prompt that will be recorded on letsrecap.com
    Entree: (Writing):
    • After discussing your reading with classmates, prepare a blog post to summarize and express  your thoughts about what you had read.  
    • Use the 3-2-1 summary format.
      • Three things learned.
      • Two things you found most interesting.
      • One thing you don't understand or still have a question about.
    Dessert (Speaking):
    Using the letsrecap.com, respond to a question on the selected article.
    • "Time Machine (1899): When Thanksgiving Was Weird"
      • If you could restore some of the old Thanksgiving traditions you read about, what would you bring back and why?
    • "Thanksgiving Day Shopping"
      • If you were a store owner, would you be open or closed on Thanksgiving Day? Explain why.
