Unit Objectives:


Students will: 

  • familiarize themselves with the history and importance of Veterans Day in the United States
  • research and share details of similar commemorations in their native country
  • compare and contrast veteran commemorations in their native country to Veterans Day in the United States
  • engage in academic conversations via video conferencing with students in Brazil 
    • discussions will include presidential election results as well as Veterans Day celebrations in the United States and abroad 
  • daily exit tickets will be completed in order to gauge understanding

Appetizer (Listening/Reading/Connections/Writing):
History of Veteran's Day
  • Together as a class, students will discuss prior knowledge of Veterans Day and its origins
    • Share your prior knowledge here.
  • Class discussion about Veterans Day in the United States.
  • After learning about the history and origin of Veteran's Day, students will compare and contrast a similar commemoration in their native country.
  • Students will submit their comparisons in writing and can choose any of the following tools to submit their work.
Entree: (Reading/Listening/Writing):
  • Through random selection, students will work with a partner to research answers to their assigned questions on this Veterans Day scavenger hunt. NOTE: This assignment will be revisited in December.
    • Students will have the opportunity to trade their randomly assigned topic with other students.
  • Questions and answers will be prepared using the tool of choice and submitted in Blackboard Learn.
Dessert (Speaking):
Using the tool of choice, students will develop a presentation on a commemoration in their native country that is comparable to Veterans Day in the United States. 

Students will orally share the following information.  NOTE: Visual aid will contain graphics to illustrate the information shared, but it should not be written on the slide. 
  • Name of the holiday/commemoration
  • When is it commemorated
  • Who exactly is honored?
  • How is it commemorated?
  • Is there a special place that people go for the commemoration?
  • A memory of this day or personal anecdote.
  • Sources must be cited either on the slide or at the end.
  • There is no minimum number of slides.
